Atlanta Holiday Home Safety Tips
The holiday season brings with it an air of excitement and warmth. Amid all of the hustle and bustle of shopping, making preparations for your family gathering, or even finalizing plans for your holiday trip, would-be thieves are also getting ready for the season too. Our real estate agents know the last thing you want this holiday season is for a break-in to happen and ruin your family's holiday and peace of mind. Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can take to safeguard your home during the holidays so you can enjoy this time with your friends and family.

  1. Discourage Package Thieves
With the rise of online shopping, packages delivered to your home are a target for thieves. Consider having your goods delivered to your office, a neighbor or other point of delivery if you won't be home to receive them. If you do have packages delivered to your home, be sure the front door and walkway are visible to your neighbors, and that home security cameras provide a view of the front door.

  2. Avoid Telling the World Your Holiday Plans
Practically everyone uses social media, including those who might want to sabotage your holiday spirit by breaking into your home. If you're planning a getaway this season, keep it low key, only sharing this information with friends and family and not on your favorite social media site.

  3. Close Blinds and Curtains
While you're at work or out shopping, deter prying eyes from seeing just what you have inside your home. Close your blinds and draw the curtains closed so that potential thieves don't have the opportunity to scope out your gifts, valuables, and electronics without even coming inside.

  4. Lock Your Home
Though it might seem obvious, a locked door may discourage a thief, especially in a busier neighborhood. Double check to make sure your windows are locked as well and avoid hiding a spare key in a visible place. For a small investment, smart locks require a key code to enter your home, and in many instances can be monitored and reported to your phone or email when opened.

  5. Your Home Should Never Look Deserted
When traveling during the holidays, it's crucial to take measures to ensure that your home doesn't announce your absence. Leave a car parked in the driveway, and use a timer to turn your lights on and off occasionally so that thieves don't realize you're away. Having a neighbor check on your home periodically will also likely dissuade burglars.

  6. Make Your Home Uninviting to Criminals
Before you go away for the holidays, make sure your sidewalk and front yard is clean and neat indicating to thieves you are home.  Trim back any bushes that may block visibility of your entryway, so that your neighbors have a good view of who is coming and going from your home. Shy away from large or numerous holiday decorations in your yard, as thieves can use them as a place to hide.
