It's not unusual to want or need to do some updates when getting ready to sell your home. And with so many amazing home makeovers all over TV, it can be tempting to want to incorporate every up-to-the-second trend into your Atlanta home for sale remodeling project. But don't get too excited just yet.
Our real estate agents know what makes your home appealing to as many potential buyers as possible. Neutral paint, décor, and finishes that look modern, but not overly trendy, and design that doesn't look too personalized offer the kind of wide appeal that can sell your home faster. So if you're selling soon, here are a few home remodeling trends you'd be better off avoiding.
- Farmhouse chic. After years of over-saturation, this design trend is finally running out of steam. This includes elements like shiplap walls, farmhouse sinks, and distressed furniture. It's also a pretty specific style, so if you're selling you'll run the risk of turning off buyers that would prefer a different look.
- Wallpaper with large, colorful prints. For starters, this trend can be difficult for anyone with less-than-professional-level interior design skills to get right. Whether you like or hate them, strong patterns and colors tend to invoke intense feelings. And you don't want to risk buyers having any kind of negative reaction. Your home's features will sell it, not quirky wallpaper. Trendy patterns also tend to go out of style quickly, making that update necessary again all too soon.
- Intricate patterns. This can apply to tile, wallpaper, or linens. When these patterns show up, they tend to end up being the focal point of the room, and you want buyers to focus on your home's features, not the décor choices. Many patterns don't photograph well either. You'll want listing photos that make buyers enthusiastic to see the property in person.
- Extreme minimalism. We've established that too much color and pattern can be a bad thing, but the opposite also applies. An entire home in stark white, with little visual interest, and next-to-no furniture just won't feel inviting to prospective buyers. It can make the home seem sterile and too impersonal.
- "Hollywood" style marquee lighting. This is not only rough on the eyes because of the position of the lights, but the aesthetic really doesn't work well anywhere. Sconces, overhead, and pendant lights are all better choices.
- Brightly colored major appliances. Think about how people cringe when they see pictures of avocado and goldenrod appliances from '70s kitchens. Brightly colored appliances are just a short time away from triggering those same kinds of reactions. Stainless steel is still the most popular finish with consumers, and it's a good neutral choice.
- Accent walls. Accent walls have been popular for quite a while, which means everyone's seen it, and it's not something that's going to make your home stand out to buyers. It also falls into the category of being too personalized. If you're doing it with paint or other materials, it immediately gets a buyer's visual attention, and if they don't like it, that's a negative. If you're doing an accent wall with photos, it's too much of a personal touch that makes it hard for buyers to visualize themselves in your home.
