As you prepare your home to put it on the market, it's easy to focus on the more obvious rooms and neglect your closets. In fact, as you clean other rooms, you may have ended up storing some additional items in your closets. Overstuffed, dark, and disorganized closets are a turn-off to prospective buyers. They want to see stylish, roomy areas in Atlanta homes for sale so they'll enough space to store what they need and not dread going into their closets.
Our real estate agents suggest the following ways to make your closets appeal to prospective buyers:
- Give your closets a thorough cleaning
Make sure to clean your closets when you're getting your home ready to sell. Empty each closet and clean it with a damp rag and extendable duster from top to bottom. Clean the floor with a vacuum if it's carpeted and with a dust mop or Swiffer Wet Jet if it has hardwood floors. After you clean, leave the doors open and let your closet dry out before replacing any items.
- Make sure your hangers match
Many people have several different types of hangers in their closet, including wire and plastic types. Buy just one type – plastic is OK if your home is moderately priced, but splurge on wooden or velvet slimline hangers if you have a luxury home. They should be all the same and all face the same way for an organized look.
- Clear the floor
The floor of your closet should have nothing on it. Store your shoes in cubbies, on shelves, or on a shoe organizer, and move all the boxes and other items you're storing out of the closet. If you need extra space, rent a storage unit to store them off-site until your home is sold.
- Eliminate the clutter
If your closets are stuffed, prospective buyers will assume that they're not big enough to suit their needs. Ruthlessly go through your clothes and other items and store, sell, or donate them. For most people, clearing out about half the contents of your closets is a good rule of thumb.
- Make things brighter
Closets tend to look dark, so add additional lighting and make sure your existing bulbs are all working and are the correct wattage. And if the walls are painted a darker color, brighten things up with a fresh coat of paint in a light neutral color.
- Separate by color and type
Don't put your clothes in your closet without organizing them first. The space will look much neater if you separate your clothes first by type – all skirts hung in the same section, for example – and then by color.
- Use baskets and bins
Organize loose items in attractive baskets and bins placed on shelves. Make sure their styles match for a neat, cohesive look.
- Leave some open space
When you're done purging your closet and making it sparkle, you should have some open space left over. Leave at least an inch between clothes on hangers so they can breathe and don't look cramped. Ideally, 20 to 30% of your closet space should be open so it looks as though it has plenty of room. If your closet still looks packed full of items, you'll need to purge more thoroughly.
