Grow a Garden - Homeownership - JYB Realty

Gardening is a fun, rewarding, and beneficial way to pass the time. Many of the Atlanta homes for sale have lots of yard space to explore your gardening adventure. Whether you are gardening for the first-time or a seasoned grower, a garden provides numerous benefits. Daily exercise, fresh air, stress reliever, and a better night's sleep are the top reasons to start a garden. Plus, the fresh vegetables are always a welcomed addition to your dinner plate.

Gardening season is the perfect time to discover your inner green thumb. Check out the following tips to get the most out of your garden experience this year.

  • Know What You Want: Do you want to plant vegetables, herbs, or flowers? Or do you want to try a combination of all three? Knowing what you want to plant is an essential part of growing a garden. Start by making a list of the types of plants you want to grow.

  • Research Your Zone: Plant hardiness depends on your gardening zone. Various plants may thrive in the Atlanta sun, but others may not survive. Learning your garden zone helps determine the types of plants you can grow from your list.

  • Location: Find the right spot in your yard for planting. If you need to expand your yard space, consider contacting one of our real estate agents. Purchasing a new home with a large yard is perfect for increasing your garden area.

  • Look for the Sun: Most plants require six hours of sunlight for success. Plan your garden location to get the most from the sun. Remember, not all plants like the sun. Some plants prefer partial shade.

  • Water Resource: Along with sunlight, a garden needs water. When planting, measure the distance to determine if your hose can reach your garden area. You may need to add an extra hose or find a different location for your garden. Check on your garden often. If your soil is dry, you know the time is right to water.

  • Right Soil: Your garden area may require extra soil. Testing your soil will help determine what types of nutrients to add.

  • Start Small: When planning a garden for the first time, start with a small area. Planting lots of seeds or vegetable seedlings can quickly turn into an overwhelming experience. Gardens need your attention. You are responsible for watering, providing nutrients, pulling weeds, and harvesting.

  • Use Mulch: Place 2 to 3 inches of mulch around your plants. The mulch helps in reducing weeds and retaining moisture. If you do not have mulch, straw or leaves can be a great substitute.

  • Get a Garden Buddy: Do you know a friend or relative who gardens? Find a person to discuss your gardening experience.
