Movie Night Tips - JYB Realty

Summer is right around the corner, and there's no better time to host an outdoor movie night. Our real estate agents provide some tips for making your cinematic adventures go off without a hitch.

Choose a Movie Everyone Will Enjoy

Unless your gathering is child-free, it's best to pick a G or PG film that's appropriate for people of all ages. If you're using social media to create an invitation, select a few potential movies and make a poll. That way, everyone can weigh in on what they want to watch.

Set Up Your Outdoor Theater

Once you've made a decision, it's time to get started. First, figure out how you're going to show the movie, whether it's by purchasing it digitally, using a DVD, or streaming it via services like Amazon Prime, Netflix, or Hulu. Creating an outdoor movie theater experience can be daunting. If you have any techie friends or family, ask them for a hand. Here's the equipment you'll need:

  • Projector –  A projector is a must for your outdoor cinema. Most projectors with wireless and Bluetooth capabilities are compatible with streaming devices and laptops and are easy to control remotely. Projectors with an LED lens provide a clear, vibrant picture. They can be costly, though, so if you don't want to make a big purchase, ask around and see if anyone has a projector you can borrow.

  • Screen – Depending on the logistics of your yard and the exterior of your home, you may be able to project the movie right onto your house or garage. If there's no viable spot to get a clear picture, or your house is made of a textured material like brick, you should probably use a portable screen. They come in all kinds of sizes—make sure to shop around and check and see if any companies offer screen rentals in your area. You may even be able to borrow one from your children's school or a neighbor.

  • Speakers – A decent sound system is a must to ensure everyone can hear clearly. Most projectors have a basic speaker that probably won't provide enough oomph for people to hear everything. Chargeable, battery-powered Bluetooth speakers are perfect for this type of use. Still, if you need to hook up a classic sound system, it's pretty easy to run a 50-foot heavy-duty extension cord and powerstrip to a garage or inside your home.

Make Some Treats

What's a movie night without popcorn?  This inexpensive, tasty snack is a true crowd-pleaser and easy to prepare. Serving it in plain paper lunch bags is an affordable way to make everyone feel like they're at the movie theater. Assorted mini-size wrapped candy is also a fave with moviegoers. Provide self-serve water, and if you're on a budget, ask guests to BYOB if they want anything else to drink. With a little planning and resourceful thinking, you can create an at-home outdoor movie night that everyone will love and remember.
