DIY or Pro - Home Remodeling - JYB Realty

Remodeling your home is a fantastic way to make your home a little bit more comfortable and a little more valuable when the time comes to put it on the market. Our real estate agents recommend taking stock of your skills and abilities before performing any remodeling. While it is fine to do some tasks by yourself, it is important to know when to leave the job to a professional.

Go Ahead and Do It Yourself

You can probably take care of most painting tasks or hanging wallpaper. Likewise, you can do landscaping and most general maintenance tasks such as replacing baseboards or repairing damaged drywall. These tasks are not that difficult, and there is minimal risk of causing lasting damage to your home. Likewise, general maintenance tasks such as replacing air filters, cleaning gutters, repairing/painting fences, etc. are also easy to perform and won't risk damage to the home.

Of course, installing tile, laminate flooring, faux brick walls, and other more complicated tasks is also possible. YouTube videos, the staff at home improvement centers, manuals, etc. can help walk you through these tasks. But, as with all home remodels, it is important to do your homework carefully before you start. Devise a plan, and make sure to slow down, take your time, and do each task precisely as the professionals advise. In fact, budget your time wisely when you decide to move forward. If it takes a professional x hours to do a task, plan on spending five times longer as you will be learning how to do the task as you go forward.

Hire a Professional

If your remodeling plans involve anything related to electricity or plumbing, hire a professional. There are several reasons for this. Not only are these inherently dangerous, if a short in the wiring causes a fire, or the new toilet you install floods the basement, your homeowner's policy may not cover it. Hiring a professional ensures these tasks are performed correctly, and you have protection if a problem emerges.

You should hire a professional to install hardwood floors, pave your driveway, and install siding. These tasks require specialized tools and training; without them, the finished result is likely to be less than appealing. Similarly, hire a professional for anything that requires a permit. For example, when building an addition. This takes more than nailing a few boards up. You will need to secure permits, inspections, etc. and it's best to leave this to a contractor who will ensure that the finished addition is up to code.

A Penny Saved is Sometimes Pound Foolish

Renovating your home can make it more valuable, and every penny you save on the remodeling costs is a penny you can put in your pocket when you put your home on the market. However, if you are not careful painting, installing flooring, etc., you can end up costing yourself money in the end. Homebuyers will look at shoddy renovation work and are likely to have concerns about the home's safety and structural integrity. If this doesn't turn them away, it can cause them to make a lowball offer in anticipation of having to hire a professional to correct the deficiencies they see.
