Home Gym Set-Up - JYB Realty

Adding a dedicated workout space to your home promotes health and wellness. It's also a great way to customize your new home or get the attention of buyers if you'll be selling soon. And the best part is that it's an upgrade that can work with any budget. Our real estate agents have seen a wide variety of gyms in Atlanta homes for sale, and we can tell you it's an upgrade you'll be glad to have. Here are some ideas to get you started

  • Think about your training goals and workout style.
This will help you decide on equipment and how much space you'll need. A home workout space can range from containing little or no equipment for bodyweight training workouts to the latest high tech cardio and weight training equipment that can cost thousands of dollars. You can use almost any space for a gym. A corner of the garage, an extra room, a basement, or even outside can offer all kinds of options for your own workout space.

  • Make a list of must-haves and splurges.
This will help you come up with a budget for upgrading your space. Your home gym doesn't have to be as versatile as the gym you pay a membership for. After all, it's unlikely you've used everything there. You probably have your favorite cardio machine and supplement it with a few other exercises. For the average person that just wants to stay in shape, there's a lot you can do without. The equipment basics will vary depending on what type of workouts you do, but you'll probably want the space to include:
    • a floor mat
    • a bench for breaks or changing shoes
    • hooks to hang a towel or small equipment like a jump rope
    • storage of some kind

  • Some basic equipment is fairly inexpensive.
A few pairs of handheld weights, resistance bands, jump ropes, a basic barbell, and yoga mats are all good examples of equipment that are fairly inexpensive even if you want higher quality. That makes it a good place to start furnishing your gym.

  • Buy used equipment.
It's not uncommon for someone to enthusiastically purchase a piece of exercise equipment as part of a New Year's resolution and later decide it isn't quite their thing. Or their lifestyle changes, and they just no longer use it. You can take advantage of that situation by looking through online marketplaces, keeping an eye out for garage or moving sales, and browsing second-hand stores to source equipment. It may take a little time to find what you're looking for, but there are plenty of deals to be had.

  • Make a plan for the future.
It's ok to start small and gradually add equipment to your gym over time if you're looking to save some money. You can also plan and save to switch out or upgrade equipment sometime in the future.

  • Consider a few DIYs.
This can take the form of something like a bench or storage, décor, or even actual gym equipment. There's a surprising number of DIY gym equipment tutorials out there on the internet. If you're a little bit handy, it can be an opportunity to save some money.
