Decluttering Like the Pros - Sellers - JYB Realty

Estimates indicate that a whopping 80 percent of items in a household sit unused. Our real estate agents find that a home with less clutter appears larger and more appealing to potential better.

If you're ready to tame your home's clutter, make sure to determine how you want to declutter. Many homeowners forgo decluttering simply because it feels too overwhelming. Here are some tips to help you find your decluttering preferences.

Decluttering Methods That Suits Your Goals

There are a slew of decluttering methods that will help you decide what things to keep. The best alternative will depend on your goals for decluttering and what you're hoping to accomplish.

Maybe you know you have too much stuff, but feel paralyzed when you think of dealing with it all. If so, check out the Minimalist Game.

Team up with a friend and use the calendar date to decide how many things to get rid of. For example, you get rid of five things on the 5th and 25 things on the 25th. By starting small with your decluttering efforts, you build confidence in your abilities.

Or, you might have a free chunk of time that you plan to use for decluttering. The KonMari Method is excellent for people who want to declutter as much as they can and keep only the items that make them happy.

By following the KonMari Method, you keep only the items that spark joy. You declutter items based on type, making it easier for you to see how much of an item you really have.

Want to add your home to the list of Atlanta homes for sale but know your home is overrun with clutter? Try the Packing Party Method. You'll go ahead and pack everything that you own into boxes. Then, when you move the boxes to your new home, you'll keep only the items that you remove from the boxes and actually use.

Try to Observe Your Home Objectively

Since you're used to seeing the clutter in your home every day, it's easy to think that your clutter isn't that bad. Try taking photos or videos of your home to see how your home looks to an impartial individual. Maybe your kitchen counters appear much more cluttered than you envisioned, or perhaps your entryway has too much stuff and creates a negative first impression.

As you look at the pictures, make notes as to which areas need work. Decide what areas need decluttering and what spaces need a better organizational system to contain the items that you do plan to keep.

Make sure to take a before picture of an area prior to decluttering. This will allow you to see how much of an impact fewer belongings have on the appearance of your home.
