Cleaning Overlooked Areas - Homeowners - JYB Realty

Oh, there are definitely spots in your house that need some deep cleaning. Even if you're a neat freak or pretty diligent about home maintenance, they're some areas you may be neglecting.

If you're not properly maintaining your home, the damages will be all too evident come inspection time. Consult our real estate agents to figure out which areas of your house could use some sprucing before putting your home up for sale.

That said, carrying out some chores can help prevent long-term and even expensive damage. Here are five cleaning tasks that don't often make it onto spring cleaning lists.

  1. Flushing out the clogs
How's your plumbing system? You never really think of your plumbing system unless there's a leak or water damage, and by then, a repair will cost you a pretty penny. That's why you should address small clogs on the regular. Check underneath your sinks and inside cabinets for water spots so you can address leaks before they cause irreparable damage.

Also, replace worn flappers and remove hair build-up in your shower. Deposits in your drains can congeal and, over time, clog your pipes.

  2. Clean your garbage disposal
On the subject of clogged pipes, pay attention to what you put down your garbage disposal. Some food items can damage your garbage disposal as well as your plumbing system. For instance, coffee grounds tend to build up in plumbing pipes causing clogs and damaging them. Other items that don't belong in a garbage disposal include eggshells, grease, oil, and non-food items.

To eliminate the gunk accumulating in your garbage disposal, run hot water and pour dish soap down the disposal. Make sure your garbage disposal is off when you scrub the blades.

  3. Clean the gutters
Throughout the year and as the seasons change, debris will accumulate in your gutters. If you don't clean out your gutters and soffits regularly, the debris could cause expensive damages like leaks and rot.

Clean out your gutters at least twice a year and caulk any holes, cracks, and loose areas. As tedious as this task is, it's crucial to ensure that your gutters are functioning as they should. Any water that leaks could damage your windows, basement, or foundation.

  4. Service your air conditioning and heating system
Modern HVAC systems perform exceptionally well during their lifetime, but they can only do so with proper care and maintenance. Like other machinery, HVAC systems are prone to wear and tear, which means they require preventative maintenance regularly. Check and change the filter every quarter as dirt, dust, and other impurities can hamper performance.

Don't forget to clean out the furnace and related ductwork. Proper cleaning will ensure your HVAC system works as it should for as long as possible. It's also advisable to request a full inspection every so often as a professional would be able to diagnose and fix any issues before they become problematic.
  1. Clean your chimney
Keeping your chimney clean can prevent home fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Chimney residue builds up over time, leaving a residue that's extremely flammable. The more the build-up, the higher the risk of fire. Before cleaning the chimney, take proper steps to protect the inside of your home from ash and soot. Cleaning the chimney will require you to get up on the roof, so you might want to consider calling in a professional.
