Interior Updates With Paint - JYB Realty

When you chose your house from Atlanta homes for sale, you probably had in mind just how you'd put your mark on it to make your home distinctively yours. One of the best ways to do that is with paint, and we mean not just painting walls but adding unique touches that give your home a designer look. You can easily change a room by painting patterns, trim, designs, and textures from floor to ceiling with relatively little expense. And then there's the versatility and richness of modern paints—so many shades and hues available in varying sheens and textures and for a variety of surfaces.

So, have a little time this weekend? Our real estate agents are happy to inspire you with some novel ideas for brightening up your home with paint.

  1. Front doors or gates
Ok, we implied that the paint would be applied indoors for significant changes, but how about starting on the front door or gate? A painted front door can have a powerful impact, adding your own unique touch to the home and increasing curb appeal. Choose a bold color if you're up to doing so or something a little more subtle, like a light blue or aqua. A suggestion: Use a satin or semi-gloss outdoor paint that will stand up to wear and tear. You can also paint the interior side of the front door or the wall trim.

  2. Contrasting trim
Speaking of trim, there are so many ways you can add visual interest by contrasting the trim with either the walls or another element, such as a kitchen island. Paint the island in, say, a bold blue, then cut it by 50 percent with white and bring the color into another room by painting the trim.

  3. Exposed shelving or wall unit
Let's say you have exposed shelving; one way to make it pop is by painting it a bold color. It's a fun way to wax creative when you don't have a lot of free wall or floor space. Go with a satin finish, which has a washable sheen.

  4. Faux ceiling trim.
After you've tackled a few painting projects with success, you may be ready for something a little more challenging, such as faux crown molding in a room without architectural trim. Installing crown molding, which is usually made of plaster or wood and can lend depth to a room, can be a rather involved project. You can achieve the aesthetics a little easier by painting on a faux crown molding. Feeling really creative? Paint a border pattern on the ceiling rather than crown molding.

  5. Fireplace surrounds.
This is a simple way to update a space. Stick to a matte finish so that it looks more natural. Add a coat of primer, so the paint doesn't get absorbed by the porous brick. Add two or three coats of oil-based paint. If you have fireplace doors, use paint made for high heat.

  6. Painted floors
Painted floors are often seen in rustic homes or the type of home that lends itself to whimsy with a distinctive painted pattern. Don't paint your floor unless you have the time it will take to prepare it adequately so the paint can stand up to traffic and remain durable. You might hire a pro to do the prep and then paint the floor yourself.
