Indoor Plant Care - Atlanta Homeowners - JYB Realty

Our real estate agents know houseplants are always a great addition to any home. Plants can help improve your air quality and the atmosphere of your home while adding a nice level of aesthetic appeal to your decor choices.

If you're new to owning houseplants, they may seem overwhelming initially, especially if you never considered yourself to have a green thumb. There are all kinds of different plants you can choose from that will make owning a plant a bit easier for you. It's always a good idea to research the best plants to own for beginners if you're new to foliage in your home.

Caring for Houseplants in Your Atlanta Home

There are a few things to consider when caring for your plants. Most will require three main things: light, water, and attention. How you care for them will vary from plant to plant, but here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  1. Water your plant as needed.
You don't want to water your plant on a schedule or timetable. The best approach to a houseplant is to water it as needed. The watering requirement will differ from plant to plant, but a good thing to keep in mind is the soil. You don't want the soil to dry out or drown out. A good rule is to keep the soil moist but not wet. Use a spray bottle to dampen your plant's soil and foliage.

  2. Give it adequate light.
Most houseplants do require some natural or imitation lighting. Some will need direct sunlight, and others indirect. Again, like watering, the type of plant will determine its lighting requirements. You don't want to put your plant in direct light, but nearby so it can soak up the sun.

  3. Fertilize your plant.
You may think it won't require fertilizer because it's a houseplant, but that's far from the truth. Every so often, you will want to fertilize your plant. It's a good idea to do your research to see what kind of fertilization the plant you have needs, but some universal fertilizers will work as well.

  4. Repot overgrown plants.
When well cared for, your plant may outgrow its current pot. Therefore you will want to repot the plant so that it continues to grow and be healthy. Make sure to take care not to break the roots when transplanting your houseplant since it may not survive once that happens.

  5. Pruning
You want to prune away dead leaves and flowers as part of good houseplant care. Your plant may develop dead leaves as it goes through seasons, so you want to help it with pruning. Most of the time, you can use your hands to remove the leaves gently. You don't want to tear them if they're still attached, so use pruning scissors.
