Design a Gallery Wall - Atlanta Homeowners - JYB Realty

Did you know April is National Decorating Month? Join in the celebration and give your home a new look for the year! One great way to update your home's decor is to design a gallery wall. Here are some tips from our real estate agents on how to create a look you'll love.

  • Decide where to put your gallery wall.
In general, you should only have one gallery wall per room, as you don't want two competing focal points. Decide where your gallery wall will be best served. Think out of the box; it doesn't have to just be behind the couch! You can use a gallery wall to draw attention to an empty part of the room or even make use of any blank wall, such as going up the stairs.

  • Select a few favorite pieces.
Your gallery wall should feature two or three focal pieces, with the rest designed around it. Choose pieces large enough to capture the viewer's attention even when surrounded by other pieces. If you are getting ready to sell your home, remember that Atlanta homes for sale do better when the decor is less personal, so replacing family photographs with a gallery wall of artwork is a good way to stage your home for sale.

  • Mix and match.
As you pull in smaller pieces to complement your two or three favorites, remember that not everything has to look the same. Feel free to mix and match art styles, frames, and sizes to create a more interesting result. An eclectic gallery wall will draw the viewer's eye better and will hold their attention longer as they are drawn to look at the next piece.

  • Decide on a layout.
If all of your items are the same size, for example, four or six similar prints, arranging them in a grid works well. For a larger group of mismatched artwork or pictures, however, consider arranging them in a more irregular fashion. Your two or three biggest and best pieces should be placed in opposite corners to balance the overall arrangement. This layout will enable you to add to or change the gallery wall over time.

  • Fill the gaps.
Once you have placed your largest and best pieces, you can start filling in the gaps with smaller pieces. Generally, the borders of wall between pieces should be about 3-6 inches and the same between each piece. To help you visualize and plan the layout without having to put a lot of holes in the wall until you get it right, cut pieces of paper to the right sizes to represent your artwork and tape them onto the wall with blue painter's tape.

Creating a gallery wall is a great way to showcase lots of artwork or photographs on one wall, making it a popular look for many homeowners. Getting your home ready to sell? Contact us today for suggestions on how to stage your home to attract more buyers.
