Protect Your Home: What to Do Before You Leave for Vacation | JYB Realty

If your schedule includes a much-needed vacation, our real estate agents recommend doing a few things before you leave to keep your home safe while you're away. Add these tasks to your to-do list to ensure your house remains secure while you're away.

  • Stop Your Mail and Package Deliveries
If you'll be away for more than a few days, contact the post office to hold your mail while you're away. The post office will hold your mail for up to 30 days, and you can schedule your request to begin as early as the next mail delivery day.

This also applies to any regular deliveries you receive. A pile of boxes is a sure sign to potential thieves that no one is currently occupying your property.

Or, if you're using a house sitter or having a trusted neighbor check on your home, ask them to collect your mail and packages while you're away.

  • Move Your Car into the Garage
Your departure day is usually a whirlwind of activity, but it's important to take a few minutes to secure your vehicle before you leave. Moving your car into your garage decreases your chances of experiencing theft or vandalism while you're away.

Or, if there's bad weather while you're vacationing, your car will be protected from hail and high winds.

  • Clean Out Your Fridge Before You Leave
Go through your fridge and throw away or freeze any items that will spoil while you're gone. You'll appreciate coming home to a tidy fridge, and you'll have a better idea of what items you need to buy once you're back.

  • Take the Trash Out
Right before you leave, empty all the trash cans in your home. This task is especially important if you have items in your trash that might cause an unpleasant odor while you're away, like food or pet waste. Don't forget to empty your bathroom and bedroom trashcans!

If you'll be listing your home with other Atlanta homes for sale when you return, you'll appreciate having this task done when you get home.

  • Adjust the Temperature on Your Thermostat
While you don't want to completely turn off your home's heating and cooling system while you're away, there's no reason to keep your home at its normal temperature. Instead, adjust your thermostat a few degrees upward in the summer months so that your home will use less energy while you're away.

Or, if you're traveling during the winter months, keep your home at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure that your pipes don't freeze.

If you have pets who will be living in your home while you're away, make sure that any temperatures will be suitable for their comfort.

  • Water Your Plants
Make sure that any plants you have will survive your absence by giving them a thorough watering before you leave. Instead of watering them from the top of the soil, try soaking them in a basin or bucket of water so that the roots can soak up adequate moisture for the plants to thrive.

Have a vase of fresh-cut flowers? Throw any fresh flowers out before you leave, or they will start to smell while you're away.

Spending a little time on your home before you leave for vacation will help keep it safe while you're away. Ready to list your home for sale? Contact us to get started.
